| Your best bet is to ask your breeder their preferred method of outdoor/paper/litterbox or house training. House training is to keep a dog totally from eliminating in the house. We have found that almost to be impossible for a younger papillon that is learning "how to control" themselves.....so from four weeks on, we expose the puppies to a mixture of equal parts of Feline Pine and Yesterday's News, both cat products, but in a smaller pellet formulation. Another great product that we will mix in are alfalfa pellets from the farm stores like Agway. It's much less expensive and made from natural grasses. The Second Nature product by Purina is also suitable, but larger and sometimes used as a "pick up and carry around" by the puppies. Initially, when we start using this method, We will line the pan with this mixture and then cover it over with a sheet of plain newsprint that we get in boxes from UHaul, known as wrapping paper (it's not the glossy stuff, just like newspaper without the black ink). We prefer the medium-sized Purina pan as it's more durable (thicker) and cannot be chewed on. For older dogs, you can use the less expensive cat litter pans or a Rubbermaid or similar underbed box. For the boys, you might get a higher tote container and cut off one side. This is also a good idea for a "ground scratcher"..... Outside the box is lined with paper as we find when one "gotta go" someone else can't wait..... |

Our boys seem to prefer a "peepole" inside....I found some "fire hydrants" at a store years ago for this use. (You can also use a liter soda pop bottle filled with stones/water.) Feline Pine makes their own scooper and when I notice any dropping in the litter it is scooped immediately...at least three times a day. The "litter mixture" is changed every other day in the winter and less in the summer as our dogs still prefer "The Great Outdoors"....even in the snow! This method is ideal when we need to be away from home for a period of longer than a few hours. Crate training is a great tool for controlling soiling, but no dog is left in it's crate for longer than four hours at a time. Most of the older ones can "hold it", but this is available should there be a need! Here's Maggie's LitterBox Story Check out the Video Movie Below.
