Someone asked....how did you get the prefix name for your papillons....KayLaDee?
Long story? You be the judge....
While doing all of the Therapy Dog work...no one ever knew which dog I would take with me,
as they were all registered. Also being involved with Home Interiors, I needed a little catchy phrase so...."Kathy and Kompany" came about.....
About 1995, when we got Chip, Laura (my niece) decided that she enjoyed the dogs and wanted to get more involved in showing.
At that time she was only 11 years old and I believed that it was a good thing to have her involved if she wanted to be and if her parents didn't object. And then we planned for our first litter.....
what should the pups be called...they need a "kennel name prefix".....
after alot of discussion....the word " Kay La Dee" flowed into the room.....KAY for Kathy Dengel, LA for Laura Dengel and DEE for DENGEL....nothing difficult...sorta "french sounding" for a papillon "french for butterfly"...yet different and unique!
And that is how KayLaDee Papillons prefix was born!!!
Our Philosophy on Breeding
Papillons (as all dogs) should be "bred to the standard and to improve the standard".
Our dogs are "pets first'....and everything else NEXT...please let me explain...
The foundation that our dogs have come from are "proven" in the areas of health, temperament, type, soundness of mind and body, good structure and movement, with wonderful personalities....HIGH QUALITY.
Routine health checks with blood work is done prior to each breeding. Our dogs eyes are registered with the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF). The patellas have been checked and cleared of patellar luxation (PL) and having obtained the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) "titles" and Therapy Dog observations has helped us to verify their wonderful and pleasing temperaments. A wonderful show dog is "nothing" without being a much loved "pet first"!
We will never win "Breeder of the Year" awards for quantity of pups produced.....because we strive for quality and spend much time developing and molding personalities and educating. Our breedings are planned with a goal in mind of producing the "best we can"!!! We basically "breed for ourselves to obtain dogs to show", but not every dog has "what it takes" to be in the conformation ring...and if it does, sometimes there is a lap and a home that is more deserving! All show dogs are sold on co-ownerships and "pet quality" dogs are sold with limited registration on spay/neuter contracts! Everyone has their "perfect papillon" envisioned in their mind....we have it here...and we are "producing even better"! The pups that are brought into this world at KayLaDee are "home raised under foot"....no kennelling, although we do strongly believe in crate training and extreme socialization! We have had heartache and know that "things will/can happen" beyond a breeders control. If you ever think about breeding you MUST weigh the PROS and CONS...acquire a "mentor" and breed the "right way"....If you are looking for a papillon, go to Dog Shows, meet papillons "in person"...they are NOT *the dog* for everyone!!! If you are not a PATIENT person....be prepared to get some patience...or else forget about a papillon. There are no "bargains" in this breed. If you desire a nice pet that needs a home and a papillon is out of your price range..go to the shelters and rescue a mixed breed!!! Please DO NOT fall for the "papillon sale" at the local pet store....and if you already have, love the one you have, consider him/her lucky and remember that we all have made mistakes at one time....but to continue this practice you are making a market for those to perpetuate inferior types for the breed...which only gets worse over time!!!
Papillons require your patience, once you have had the patience of waiting to get one!!! Maybe this is why breeders are so "selective" and will "choose the dog for YOU!!"

Also a special thank you must go out to Nana and Kenny Ridgeway, Nanken Papillons, who gave us another chance.....Nanken Kelebek is the absolute most wonderful mother in the world....she has the potential to share the best of her qualities with the future generations of KayLaDee Papillons and without her we would have been unable to carry on!
