Belly Bands for the Boys
What is a “belly band”?
A cumberbund…. A piece of cloth, contained in this packet, that helps to prevent a male dog from “marking”….also can be used in some cases for incontinence. Wonderful tool in training the smaller or “toy” dogs.
How to measure?
Around the waist right in front of the penis. For an incontinent dog, you can add a higher absorbency pad that will allow the dog more access to your home environment. Just add an extra inch or two to the measurement.
When and How to use?
When the dog is in the home area or an area prone to marking.
This is not a replacement for pottying or housetraining.
When the dog is crated or in an area where they can utilize a doggie door for outside area or a place in the home that is acceptable for their urination, these should not be used. They are great for a couple hours at a time… when you can’t watch them every minute. Take the band off right before he goes outside and immediately put one back on when he comes inside.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a replacement for “potty time”… For dogs that have major incontinence problems, I strongly suggest crate training for those times…best from the time they are a puppy!!!
In this packet, enclosed in a “baggie”, you will find a couple “pads” that you can use to start. Place one lengthwise with the band. This is great when traveling in hotel rooms. If the dog is not used to the band, he may fuss at first. Redirect his attention. When you see him “lifting” you still can correct as normal. He also may “pee in the band”…. Many will do it a couple times and then realize that this is not acceptable behavior or it just doesn’t feel good. That is why I suggest using the small pads at first. After awhile, some dogs will see the band coming and know that lifting is unacceptable behavior. If the band gets wet, just put back in the baggie, so you can wash it when you are able. They are machine washable and dryable. You might want to have an extra couple on hand.
Ours have at least two inches of velcro for adjustment and we also use elastic on the sides (front and back) to keep it in place. We do not use a “vinyl or plastic” insert, but those can be special ordered for an additional cost.
